Founded in 1965, the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA) is dedicated to representing and advancing the interests of the outdoor amusement industry throughout North America.
For over 40 years the OABA has been at the forefront in establishing safety guidelines and regulations, lobbying governments on behalf of its members, establishing a code of ethics for the industry and helping members speak as one voice.

The OABA's Circus Unit was established in 1998 and is designated to represent the interests of the circus industry, animal exhibitors and various productions and shows. The Circus Unit is headed up by a Circus Executive Committee (CEC). The CEC was elected by the circus membership and represent individuals who are actively involved in the industry. The CEC is overseen by OABA's Executive Director and elected Board of Directors. Within the CEC, there are subcommittees such as animal issues, government relations, fundraising, and education/communication.

The OABA publishes a monthly newsletter, SHOWTIME, which is sent to all members to inform and update them on industry news. There is a section devoted specifically to circus news. |

Responsible animal care and training are important issues for the Circus Unit. Many circus animals are on the list of endangered species. Circuses have made great strides in the perpetuation of many of these species. An important aspect of exhibiting these magnificent animals is to create an awareness of their plight. The OABA works with federal, state and local governments regarding regulations that affect these animals, and consequently, in some cases, the entire species. In 2000 the Circus Unit will institute a program in which exotic animal rides will contribute a percentage of their income to a national conservation program. At the same time, the Circus Unit Animal subcommittee is developing and drafting industry guidelines, particularly relating to animal care and training. |
Establishing and increasing member benefits such as nationwide soft drink discounts, health and disability insurance, and providing industry wide professional assistance with media and legal issues, have helped the OABA to grow and forge an important bond with its membership. The members rely on the OABA to review pending legislation that may adversely affect the industry and organize the opposition. This new century will bring a host of challenges and opportunities for the circus industry. By working for common goals through the OABA, the industry will continue to prosper well into the future. |
